Thanks For the Memories

This is a relevant, timely, and small world story. A friend just sent me a link to a short history of the Israeli Air Force. If the link doesn’t work for you, it’s worth copying. The story is just a few minutes long. As Jane Ace used to say during the golden age of radio, “You could have knocked me over with a fender!” Sometime it amazed me that I can’t remember where i put something an hour ago, but something like this triggers a crystal clear memory from 70+ years ago. When you finish watching, I suspect you’ll have a similar reaction to mine about the IAF. “You’ve come a long way, baby.”

These are dire days for the Jewish state. Almost its entire economy has come to a halt as 330,000 men and women under arms await the dreaded call to action while Israel and Hamas play a grandmaster’s chess game. After it is over, the tourism sector of the economy will be in tatters fro years to come. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem and if that means war first, so be it. Pray for the safety of the hostages. May they survive whatever is to come.

OMG!

Somewhere in the group picture is my mother’s cousin Irwin Spitzer. I remember Irwin well. He lived in Bell Harbor and owned a black cocker spaniel. I loved that dog and he me. Come cool weather Irwin would always wear his brown bomber jacket. When Irwin retired from the air force he volunteered for Machal. I don’t remember the story clearly but during the war, he had gained experience with Czech aircraft. He volunteered for Machal. He said flying those planes was like flying an 18-wheeler and because they had so many different parts (remember Johnny Cash’s song about stealing parts from the auto plant to make himself a Cadillac?) they were very unpredictable in the air. While he flew several missions, Irwin apparently was a crack trainer. As Israel added planes to its air force during and after the War of Independence, he would test fly them and teach Israeli pilots the ropes on them.

Thanks for the memories…
